Spotlight: Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is one of the fastest-growing areas in the U.S. and one of my favorite Florida destinations. With almost perfect seasonal weather, it's easy to enjoy a super-relaxed few days or a more extended vacation. Fort Lauderdale has a laid-back vibe, that makes it a welcome respite from more saturated tourist spots like Miami.

Here is a city that thrives on displaying bright neon colors splashed everywhere!

I stay at the centrally located boutique DalMar Hotel, a quiet and restful location for returning after a day filled with activity. After check-in, I head straight for the turquoise Atlantic Ocean to watch sparkling waves roll over almost 24 miles of golden beaches. How exhilarating it is to have warm salty breezes coupled with the bright sun ripple through my hair. I acclimate to the beach scene by treating myself to a refreshing cocktail and nibbles from the open-air bar at the nearby Ritz Carlton Fort Lauderdale. What a great way to unwind while I watch palm trees sway along the scenic Ocean Boulevard!

The sun-filled beach scene is a guarantee for non-stop fun!

Later, I walk past world-famous boating canals making my way down from the connecting beach to bustling Las Olas Boulevard. This compact area has over 120 specialty shops and a lively multi-cultural restaurant scene with indoor and outdoor dining. For art lovers, there are numerous world-class galleries and the outstanding NSU Art Museum, which is the hub of the South Florida Art Coast. A fashionista's dream exhibit, "The World of Anna Sui", is currently showing.

Be prepared for a long and scenic walk down Las Olas Boulevard to unveil geographic and shopping treasures!

Although new residential and commercial building continues to restructure the small neighborhoods off Las Olas Boulevard, there is one area I visit regularly. Once a warehouse district, the booming downtown Flagler Village is now filled with modern hi-rise living and hip new restaurants that attract locals and visitors. Dozens of retired warehouses in the area are now used to showcase gallery spaces that highlight contemporary art and offer immersive art experiences.

As new construction is seen everywhere in Flagler Village, there is a strong contrast between the old and the new.

Flagler Village is also home to galleries and studios within the FATVillage Arts & Technology District. While this area is small geographically, it is gaining national attention and is being compared to Miami's Wynwood neighborhood.

The sound of daily rolling freight cars carrying cargo on the old Flagler railroad adds to the gritty atmosphere of this tucked-away location. The audible reverberation adds to the urban feel.

FAT Village draws in crowds to view single paintings or immersive warehouse installations that rotate!

The famous Flagler Railroad carries freight cars daily and runs past parallel thought-provoking and story-telling murals.

There are plenty of ways to stay busy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida's eighth-largest city. It is the perfect destination for a couple's getaway weekend or an extended family vacation. So, pack up your swimsuits, sunscreen, floppy hat and stylish walking shoes, and bring your appetite. Don't forget to come with your best sunny smile to embrace the time spent in Fort Lauderdale entirely!

Don’t get left holding a “Wish You Were Here!” postcard and be out in the dark!
Start planning that trip to enjoy your own Florida sunshine!
